Turismo Interno (Interior Tourism) is an ongoing project that involves the documentation and appropriation of the municipal painting practice observed in Puerto Rico, by which municipalities paint their public infrastructure with unique bands of color. The process of marking territory through embellishment, employing paint as the medium, can be seen as an aesthetic, artistic and geopolitical practice by the state. Turismo Interno is also essentially a tropical road trip project, the destinations being guided by bands of color instead of commonplace tourist attractions. The title is a reference to the history of promotional tourism campaigns aimed at the local population, using it in defiance, as an alternate campaign – a deviated view of the island’s enchantment.

Artworks from this project take on multiple forms, including paintings, intervention of found objects, photographic documentation, digital collage imagery and on-site painted “insertions”.
