Residency at San Juan 721, during the summer of 2024.
Continuing our research of municipal painting in Puerto Rico, during this residency we expanded our work towards a form of sculptural painting. Reproducing the surfaces of wooden utility poles, incorporating hardware pieces, cables, and age-related qualities as pure visual language (the concrete as abstract). And looking to define a “tropical-edge” form of geometric abstraction: a loose, object-heavy variant of the hard-edge form, but unworried about post-painterly qualities such as precision, harmony... purity. Instead, asserting notions of tropicality with all its political, post-colonial associations.
