Face au soleil, 2022.
Presented at Kilómetro gallery in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

A practice as a portal, color as a compass. An approach to the insular, rooted in a connection with the sun. The gaze placed on the transcendental power of color, giving shape to the phenomenal, and giving rise to a meditation on the “here” and the “there” (beyond).

The works gathered here developed their signature project on municipal painting in Puerto Rico, but from another vantage point, a distant one (Montreal). From this other place, they transform their approach to municipal color towards a mystical, symbolic and primitive sphere, a nod to ancestral pictorial expressions of the sun and other natural icons.

Here for the first time, the duo detangles the municipal color codes, spreads out the geography of the territorial palette, and approaches color from an energetic standpoint. The result is a body of work on the opposite side of the science spectrum, entering a mystical and symbolic spectrum, representing phenomena of the Caribbean landscape: sunsets, green flashes, pristine waterfalls, rising vapors... Where previously their work was tethered to field investigation and reproduction, here they enter into notions of longing, fleeting phenomenons and a heavily spiritual arena. As such, the exhibition alludes to a mystic, inner approach to the notion of “vacacioneo tropical”:  a spiritual daytrip, with the sun as a vanishing point. As a followup to their first solo show Turismo Interno (El Lobi, 2019), it begs the question: where does the “inner” part stand after migrating?
