Their work focuses on the codification of public infrastructure through colored bands painted by municipalities in Puerto Rico, which they refer to as “municipal painting.” Through road trips, photographic documentation, paint sampling, and color reproduction, their work suggests a crossover between landscape painting and abstraction, revealing the power of color as a cartographic tool for both territory and identity. In recent years, their work has incorporated a phenomenological component, prompting reflections that straddle the metaphysical and the somatic experience of color, pointing toward sensitive and imaginary topographies of the territory. Interdisciplinary in nature, Raymond and Sandín’s pictorial practice draws inspiration from the languages of abstraction and conceptual art, through creative processes that fuse knowledge from the fields of urban planning, art conservation, and dance. Their work often incorporates sculptural qualities, through the use of found objects, natural elements, and building materials, and is frequently characterized by ephemeral and non-static aspects, inspired by an expanded vision of dance that permeates much of their work. They use various strategies, including recycling, citation, appropriation, but also research with various codes and references, for example, architecture, construction, the urban and even identity, etc., as well as experimentation with the materials. And looking to define a “tropical-edge” form of geometric abstraction: a loose, object-heavy variant of the hard-edge form, but unworried about post-painterly qualities such as precision, harmony... purity. group of artists whose practices meander through territorial retrieval, sensorial awareness and contemporary notions of tropical aesthetics.&nbsp; The exhibition is imagined as opening a discussion on the idea of what an uncertain state can be - both territorially, in reference to Puerto Rico’s associated relationship to the United States, and psychosomatically, as in a state of being. The title is taken from an article published in 1983 by National Geographic - The Uncertain State of Puerto Rico -&nbsp; which gives a third-worldesque overview of Puerto Rico’s socio-political dynamics of the time.&nbsp; The exhibition aims to rethink the gallery space as a tropical-infused sensorial environment: a microcosm that elicits a state of reception, an anti-productive tropicality, a gateway to kinship and the opening of the senses - all seen here as expanded forms of identity, and of resistance. &nbsp; Through her scent-based work, Chaveli Sifre brings Caribbean smells into the exhibition arena, facilitating the process of dis-othering. Jorge González centers his work around Boricua (Puerto Rican) folklore and craft, creating more inclusive narratives between the indigenous and the modern, while Radamés Figueroa’s works examine Caribbean stereotypes with humour while reclaiming notions of tropical leisure from colonialism and tourism. The sound works of Joel Rodríguez offer a filtered gaze of paradise, undercoated in political reverberations, mirroring the work of duo Melissa Raymond and René Sandín on the sensorial and geopolitical properties of color through the reproduction of color schemes found&nbsp; along Puerto Rico’s roads and utility poles. Our approach will be that of an “aménagement” of the gallery, seeking to create an environment by juxtaposing our works in ways that they function as a setting. A setting that arouses the senses and welcomes the visitor to unwind, eliciting the idea of the space becoming a tropical getaway. Through road trips and processes of encounter, documention, sampling and reproduction, the research on municipal painting (as we’ve come refer to it) creates a triangular bridge between landscape, painting and abstraction, while summoning contemporary notions of Caribbean identity and post-colonial tropicality. &nbsp; Our research on municipal painting materializes as photography use in the Western Hemisphere: Puerto Rico’s La Fortaleza. By creating skies through the reproduction of the traditional light blue or pale gray tones used to paint the colonial fortress, the body of work emphasizes the notion that limitations are more than often set from within.
